Australian Bush Poetry National Written Championship

The Australian Bush Poetry National Written Championship is run annually in conjunction with the Australian Bush Poetry Association (ABPA) national performance bush poetry championships. A poetry group from a different state each year runs the event under ABPA guidelines. Bush poetry must have an Australian theme and strong rhyme and metre. The first bush poetry competition was held in Tamworth at the Imperial Hotel in 1987. Seven years later, in 1994, a meeting was convened by 23 interested performers, which resulted in a proposal to form the ABPA. The Association now boasts a 500-strong membership base and produces a bi-monthly magazine.
