Writers' Hub: Monthly Update

The change in weather has had a few of us in the office feeling a bit under-the-weather, hence the late monthly update. But don't despair, there's still time to submit to these great October Writing compeitions.

Glen Phillip Poetry Prize

The Glen Phillip Poetry Prize is open to poems on any theme up to 50 lines that are unpublished and have not won any other competitions or awards. There are two categories for submission, Adult and Youth (12–17) and multiple submissions are allowed.

Eligibility: Anyone can enter.

Entry: $10 for each entry, $20 for 3, $30 for 5 and youth entries are $5 each.

Prizes: $200 for first place, $100 for second, $50 for third and a $50 Novice Poet Award.

Joseph Furphy Commemorative Literary Prize

The Joseph Furphy Commemorative Literary Prize is open to both poems and short stories. Poems can be on any theme up to 40 lines in the Open Category and up to 30 lines for the Youth Category. Short stories can also be on any theme and up to 3,500 words for Adults, 3,000 words for Youth and 2,000 words for Juniors. Multiple entries are allowed for all categories.

Eligibility: There are two categories for poetry: Open and Youth (U18) and three for short stories: Adult, Youth (13–18) and Junior (U12).

Entry: $5 entry fee per entry in Open and Adult categories and free entry for Junior and Youth.

Prizes: $150 for Open first prize, $75 for Youth first prize (poetry) $300 for Adult first prize, $100 for Youth first prize and $50 for Junior first (short story.)

Sporting Life in the Hunter

This competition is for poems up to 100 lines and prose between 200 – 2, 500 words around the theme of sport. You are allowed to submit up to 3 entries per category.

Eligibility: Anyone can enter.

Entry: $10 per entry, limit of 3 entries per category.

Prizes: $350 first prize, $250 second prize.

Best of Times Short Story Competition

Do you think you’re funny? Well now is your chance to prove it with the Best of Times Short Story Competition. They’re looking for short story submissions up to 2,500 words, which can be on any theme, as long as they’re humorous.

Eligibility: Anyone can enter.

Entry: Multiple entries are allowed.

Prizes: $300–500 for first prize and $100 for second prize.
