[Insert clichéd line about the start of spring here]. It’s the beginning of September and that means one thing for writers … stay away from season themed poetry!
Spring is traditionally a season of new things, so maybe it’s time to put aside that difficult story you’ve been tinkering with all winter and start something fresh? Put that increased energy to good use and enter these competitions before time runs out.
Writing Competitions: Closing Soon!
This competition is exclusively for pieces in the memoir genre, written works can be up to 500 words long for Youth entrants (WA only, 8-18) and up to 1000 words in the Adult category. Youth (8-18) free entry max 500 words. Adult 1000 words, 1 story $10, 2 stories $15, 3 stories $20.
Entry: free for Youth, Adult: 1 story $10, 2 stories $15, 3 stories $20
Prizes: Range from $50 to $100
Closing: 15 September 2017
This prestigious national award for short-form crime writing features three main categories: Fiction, Non Fiction and Poetry. They also have three extra awards: the Emerging Authors Award, the Youth Award for writers under 18, and the New England Award for writers resident in that region. The Prize is open to both published and unpublished writers, and you can enter as many times as you like (though a separate entry fee applies for each entry).
Entry: $10 for adults, $5 for youth (under 18)
Prize: Range between $150 to $500
Theme: All genres of crime writing are accepted
Closing: 21 September 2017

The ABPA National Written Championship happens every year and is one of the biggest bush poetry competitions in Australia. Anyone can enter and there is no line limit and no limit to the number of submissions allowed. Poems should be original and not have won a previous competition.
Entry: $10.00 for adults, juniors free, $5 for each additional poem
Prizes: Unspecified monetary prizes

Entries for the Southern Cross Short Story Competition have now opened, so get writing. The competition is run biennially by the Ballarat Writers and is open to anyone over 18 years of age. Short stories can be up to 3000 words on any theme and up to three entries are allowed per person. All work submitted must be unpublished and not have previously won any award.
Eligibility: Anyone over 18 years.
Entry: $20 per submission, or $17 per submission for Ballarat Writers’ members.
Prize: $1000 first prize, $400 second prize and $100 third prize.
Closing: 16 October 2017
Entries are now open for The Peter Cowan Writers Centre's 2017 Glen Phillips Poetry Prize Competition. Poems up to 50 lines are accepted and there is an open theme.
Entry: $10 for adults, $5 for youth (12-17)
Prize: First place $200, second place $100, third place $50; Novice Award $50; Judge's Encouragement Award for Youth (12-17 years) $50
