November Writing Competitions

Who else can't believe it's November already? As Christmas hurtles towards us an increasingly frightening pace, it can be hard to find time to do anything for yourself. If you are lucky enough to find a spare moment, then you might want to think about submitting to one of these great writing competitions. 

If you don't have time to do anything more than throw your hands up in the air in despair, then console yourself with some Christmas shopping at the Melbourne Books online store. There's sure to be something for everyone. 

Judith Wright Poetry Prize

An annual competition organised by Overland that always publishes the best poetry in the country. The prize is for new and emerging poets with no more than one collection of poetry published under their own name.

Entry: $20 for non Overland subscribers and $12 for subscribers.

Prizes: $6000 first prize, $2000 second prize, $1000 third prize.

Closing: 19 November 2017


Neilma Sidney Shory Story Prize

Supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation, this competition seeks envigorating short fiction of 3000 words about the notion of 'travel'. Organised by Overland, this prize is open to all writers, Australian and international.

Entry: $20 for non Overland subscribers and $12 for subscribers

Prizes: $4000 and publication in Overland for fist prize, $500 and online publication for two runners-up.

Closing: 19 November 2017


V International Flash Fiction Competition

Stories of no more than 100 words in either English, Spanish, Hebrew or Arabic can be submitted. Writers from anywhere in the world can submit a maximum of two stories.

Entry: none

Prizes: ranging from $1000 to $20,000
