We're nearly there for 2017 but writers have no rest! We toil and toil away, crafting stories with words and rhythm, ignoring all the Christmas cheer around us. And when we are done, we sit back, look at our creation and think 'what now?'

Ouen Press Short Story Competition 2017

Ouen Press's Short Story Competition is still open for a couple more weeks. Short stories from any writers over 18, written to the theme 'Taste' are eligible.

Entry: none

Prizes: £300 first prize, £100 two runners up.

The Fiction Desk Ghost Story Competition

This annual competition tries to find the best supernatural writers, though 'ghost story' is open to interpretation.

Entry: £8

Prizes: £500 first prize, £250 second prize, £100 third prize

Tasmanian Writers Prize 2018

Despite the name of the prize, this short story competition is open to all residents of Australia and New Zealand. The prize asks for stories of up to 3000 words, having an island theme.

Entry: $20

Prizes: $500 and publication in Tasmania 40°South
