Welcome to the first of our monthly blog posts in Melbourne Books’ Writers Hub! We will keep you updated on all Australian writing competitions open for submissions over the month as well as all news for Award Winning Australian Writing.

June: 

June is a big month for writers with the Emerging Writers’ Festival happening in Melbourne from June 14 to 23, the Williamstown Literary Festival on June 17 and 18 and a whole slew of great competitions to enter.

VU Short Story Prize

We’ve just received an update that the deadline for this has been extended to 14 June, open to new and emerging writers who have not published a book through a publisher (self-published is ok) for short fiction up to 3000 words

Eligibility: Australian residents.

Entry: Free entry for students of Victoria University, $12 for Overland subscribers or $20 for everyone else.

Prize: $6000 first prize, $1000 each for two runners-up and the winner will be published in Overland magazine.

Blake Poetry Prize 

Up to 100 lines of poetry with a spiritual or religious theme, the competition is non-denominational and open to all Australian residents.

Eligibility: Australian residents.

Entry: $20

Prize: $5000 for first place.

Patrons Prize for Poets

Poetry up to 50 lines on any theme.

John Marsden Prize for Young Australian Writers

This competition is open to young aussie writers between the ages of 18 and 24, submissions are open in three categories: fiction, non-fiction and poetry. There’s a word limit of up to 3000 words or 100 lines of poetry and a maximum of two entries across the three categories.

Eligibility: Australian residents aged 18-24

Prize: First place is $500 and a pack of YA titles

Grace Marion Wilson Emerging Writers Competition

A competition for emerging writers, who have had no more than 3 stories or articles published in a recognised book, magazine or journal. Entries are open for short stories and creative non-fiction between 2000 and 3000 words.

Eligibility: Victorian writers

Prize: $1000 for first place, $250 for runners-up

KSP Writers' Centre Ghost Story

For all of you horror and thriller writers out there the Katherine Susan Pritchard Writers’ Centre ghost story competition is now open for youth, 8-18, and adults. Stories can be up to 500 words or 25 lines of poetry in the youth category, and 1500 words or 50 lines for adults.

Eligibility: Australian residents

Prize: $25-$50

Boroondara Literary Awards

An open theme competition for short stories between 1500 and 3000 words, the only caveat is that the work must not have been previously published in any form.

Eligibility: Australian residents

Prize: First place $1500, second place $1000, third place $500

NUW Fair Australia Prize

Presented by Overland Literary Magazine (which is a great read if you want to check it out), the NUW Fair Australia Prize is looking for fiction, essays, graphics and poetry on the theme of fair Australia. Fiction and essays can be up to 3000 words and 88 lines for poetry. Multiple submissions are accepted, but only unpublished work may be submitted.

Eligibility: Anyone can enter

Entry: Free

Prize: $4000 for first prize in each category and publication in Overland.
