Upcoming Writers’ Events and Competitions

If you’re feeling inspired or have a few short stories sitting in your desk waiting to be put out into the world, then we have a whole slew of great competitions closing soon you can submit to. If you’re not feeling all that inspired and in fact, are maybe a little disheartened then why not get yourself off to one of the writing or poetry festivals happening in the next couple of weeks? If that doesn’t have your fingers burning and mind racing then nothing will.​

Field of Words Memoir Competition

Field of Words — which, incidentally is another great online resource for writers — is running a memoir competition. They’re looking for writing based on real life events and experiences. Stories must be between 1000 and 2000 words and the competition closes at the end of the month, so get those entries in quick!

Eligibility: Over 18 from anywhere in the world.

Entry: $20 per entry with unlimited submissions

Prizes: First prize $500 and runner up $125 as well as promotion through Field of Words social media channels.

Scribe Writers ‘Short Takes’

Scribe Writers is running its popular ‘Short Takes’ competition once again this year. Entries can up to 1000 words and can be either fictional short stories or memoirs on an open theme.

Eligibility: Anyone in Australia can enter.

Entry: $7 per entry, multiple submissions are allowed.

Prizes: $200 for first place and $100 for a runner up.

The Port Stevens Literature Award

This competition is open to entries on any subject up to 2000 words and anyone can enter.

Entry: $10 for the first entry and $5 for subsequent entries.

Prizes: $500 first prize, $300 second prize, $150 third prize and 4x$25 for highly commended.

If you find yourself in or around Newcastle on 28 September – 2 October, then why not check out the National Young Writers’ Festival? The majority of their events are free and you can find their full program here. ​

 

Tasmanian Poetry Festival

For Tasmania poets and poetry enthusiasts the Tas Poetry Fest is fast approaching. They’ll be running their fringe event/curtain raiser on 30 September at Mountain Mumma Restaurant with the official festival kicking off on Friday 6 October and running until Sunday 8 October. Writefest Bundaberg
