The days might finally be getting longer but that’s not the only exciting thing about August. This is the month where we finally launch our 10th Anniversary edition of Award Winning Australian Writing. We’ll be celebrating this momentous occasion at the Athenaeum Library on Wednesday 30 August, where the book will be officially launched.

Boroondara Literary Awards

An open theme competition for short stories between 1500 and 3000 words, the only caveat is that the work must not have been previously published in any form.

Eligibility: Australian residents

Prize: First place $1500, second place $1000, third place $500

NUW Fair Australia Prize

Presented by Overland Literary Magazine (which is a great read if you want to check it out), the NUW Fair Australia Prize is looking for fiction, essays, graphics, and poetry on the theme of fair Australia. Fiction and essays can be up to 3000 words and 88 lines for poetry. Multiple submissions are accepted, but only unpublished work may be submitted.

Eligibility: Anyone can enter

Entry: Free

Prize: $4000 for first prize in each category and publication in Overland.

KSP Writers' Centre Short fiction

The Katherine Susan Pritchard writers’ centre is opening up their short fiction competition for pieces up to 2500 for adults and 2000 words for youth up to 18. The stories can be on any theme and up to 3 entries are allowed.

Eligibility: Australian residents

Entry: Youth: free. Adults: 1 story $10, 2 stories $15, 3 stories $20

Prizes: First place $300, second place: $150

Outstanding LGBTIQ short story competition

Short stories of only 750 words which have relevance to the broader Australian LGBTIQ community. The theme for this year’s competition is ‘It’s complicated.’ You should also check out their Facebook page to get some inspiration and look at great resources.

Eligibility: Australian and New Zealand residents

Entry: free

Prizes: $1000 for first place, $500 for youth prize

KSP Writers' Centre Memoir

This competition is exclusively for pieces in the memoir genre, written works can be up to 500 words long for Youth entrants (WA only, 8-18) and up to 1000 words in the Adult category. Youth (8-18) free entry max 500 words. Adult 1000 words, 1 story $10, 2 stories $15, 3 stories $20.

Entry: free for Youth, Adult: 1 story $10, 2 stories $15, 3 stories $20

Prizes: Range from $50 to $100

Australian Bush Poetry National Written Championship

The ABPA National Written Championship happens every year and is one of the biggest bush poetry competitions in Australia. Anyone can enter and there is no line limit and no limit to the number of submissions allowed. Poems should be original and not have won a previous competition.

Entry: $10.00 for adults, juniors free, $5 for each additional poem

Prizes: Unspecified monetary prizes

Southern Cross Short Story Competition

Entries for the Southern Cross Short Story Competition have now opened, so get writing. The competition is run biennially by the Ballarat Writers and is open to anyone over 18 years of age. Short stories can be up to 3000 words on any theme and up to three entries are allowed per person. All work submitted must be unpublished and not have previously won any award.

Eligibility: Anyone over 18 years.

Entry: $20 per submission, or $17 per submission for Ballarat Writers’ members.

Prize: $1000 first prize, $400 second prize and $100 third prize.
